🏡 Standing with Veterans: Protecting Families from Predatory Housing Practices

A Story That Deserves to Be Heard

In Utah, a local combat veteran and his family are facing the unimaginable — losing their home after what they believed was a solution to save it.
Floyd Benally, a proud Native American and U.S. Army tank operator who served in Iraq, and his wife Natasha worked hard to build a stable life for their family. When financial hardship hit, they sought help through what was presented as a home “buy-back” program — a deal that promised temporary relief and the chance to repurchase their home once they were back on their feet.

Instead, the program left them without their home and searching for answers.

How It Happens

Unfortunately, situations like this aren’t isolated. Across the country, predatory real-estate tactics have been quietly targeting homeowners in distress — especially seniors, veterans, and those from historically marginalized communities.

These transactions are often structured to look legitimate but can hide loan-like terms or aggressive buy-back conditions that make it nearly impossible for families to recover ownership. When payments are missed, the “buyers” or investors can quickly file eviction actions, leaving families homeless and stripped of equity they spent years building.

Why This Matters

Floyd’s story highlights a critical issue: veterans and working families deserve better protection from predatory housing schemes that exploit trust and financial vulnerability.
These situations raise serious questions about how easily bad actors can use complex contracts to take advantage of homeowners who are simply trying to find a way forward.

What You Can Do

Awareness is the first step toward change. Here’s how you can help:
1️⃣ Share this story to raise awareness about how predatory housing programs operate.
2️⃣ Support housing justice initiatives — local nonprofits, veterans’ housing programs, or community legal-aid organizations that protect families in crisis.
3️⃣ Advocate for stronger consumer protection laws to ensure that no family loses their home to deceptive practices.

Moving Forward

“When you’ve served your country, you shouldn’t have to fight to keep your home.”

The Benally family’s courage in speaking out shines a light on a problem that affects too many. With community support, awareness, and accountability, we can help ensure no veteran or family faces this kind of loss again.
